What is a Droid?

Well, we’ll assume you are talking about smartphones, otherwise get ready for us to talk at length about the Star Wars multiverse, R2D2 and the significance of Jawas.  Now, if you are talking about smart phones, then the term “droid” really just refers to the Motorola Droid smartphone.  However, the phrase is starting to be used more widely to refer to any phone running the Google Android operating system.

What makes the Android OS so special? Well, it’s based on the open source Linux kernel and what is great about that Android has a large support community. What that means for you, the consumer, is that there are more people making applications for your phone and many of them are free. At this time, there are more than 150,000 apps available in the Android App Market.

The Android OS also can be used to power other devices, like e-readers and tablet PCs, so you can expect to see more Android talk in the coming days.

So, let’s say you are looking for an Android-Powered phone. Well, there are many, many options. Check out the Wikipedia entry for the “List of Android Devices“, if you don’t believe us.

What exactly is Android?

Android is the software that is powering the next generation of smart phones, e-readers and tablet PCs. The term, Android, is used to refer to both operating system as well as some of the key applications. Android OS was originally developed by Android Inc., but it was acquired by Google in 2005. The first unveiling of Android to the public, however, took place in 2007.

The Android OS software stack consists of many components. All of the following are included in some fashion: Java, Davlik VM, C, XML, C__OpenCore, SQLite, OpenGL, Bionic libc and WebKit. In fact, the operating system (including the system kernel) is more than twelve million lines of code.
